Many Western apps and websites are blocked in mainland China. However, there are multiple ways that allows you to continue use your apps. The most recommended method is to get a eSIM card. Some of the phone model doesn’t support eSim function. In that case, you might want to contact your mobile server for data roaming service.

Yes, most foreign nationals need a tourist visa (L visa). However, as of November 30, 2024, citizens of 38 countries can enter China without a visa for stays up to 30 days for purposes of tourism. This policy is in effect until December 31, 2025.

Eligible countries include:

  • Europe: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

  • Asia-Pacific: Australia, Brunei, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea

  • Others: Andorra

Also, eligible travellers from 54 countries are allowed to stay in China for up to 10 days (240 hours) without a visa when transiting to a third country. This policy is available at 60 ports across 24 provinces.

Yes, China is very safe for tourists, including solo travelers. Just follow basic travel precautions like you would anywhere. 

In major cities and tourist spots, basic English is often understood by young generation. But in rural or less touristy areas, it’s helpful to have a translation app or a local guide.

Mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay are dominant. Visitors can now link international cards to these apps, or use cash/card in larger establishments.

Tipping is not expected in most places, and often not accepted in smaller local restaurants. However, in upscale hotels or with private tour guides, tips are appreciated.

In general, spring and Autumn offer the best weather. Avoid national holidays like Golden Week(a week starting from May 1st and October 1st ) when travel is extremely busy.
